Evans City Borough is proud to announce the launch of Project READY (Responder Education for Awareness of Disability), a new initiative aimed at improving emergency outcomes for individuals with disabilities. Introduced in Butler County earlier this year through a collaboration between Butler County Human Services, Alliance for Nonprofit Resources, and Cranberry Township EMS, Project READY equips first responders with critical tools to recognize and respond appropriately when communication or behavior may differ from expectations.
Why Project READY Matters
During emergencies, individuals with disabilities may not respond as first responders anticipate, potentially leading to confusion, delays, or unsafe outcomes. Project READY addresses these challenges by providing impactful resources designed to alert responders to the possibility of an atypical interaction.
Key Tools
- Reflective Decals: Homes and vehicles with disabled occupants can display a highly visible decal stating, “Occupant May Not Respond as Expected.” These decals signal to police, fire, and medical personnel that they may need to adjust their approach, ensuring safer and more effective interactions.
- Yellow Dot Medical Information Booklet: Paired with the decal, this booklet offers essential medical information about the individual, allowing responders to make informed decisions during emergencies.
Adapting for Schools
At the request of Seneca Valley School District, Project READY has introduced a “Student May Not Respond as Expected” version of the decal. Seneca Valley has begun displaying these in classrooms and hallways where students may require additional support, with the goal of expanding to all county school districts by year’s end.
