A 2020 inspection report for Evans City’s Harrison Street Bridge (between Jefferson and Van Buren Streets) concludes:
“…deterioration that has occurred to the substructure of this bridge has reached a point where the need for replacement is inevitable and should be considered over any kind of rehabilitation.”
More than five years after that inspection, and following a significant reduction in its allowable weight-bearing capacity, full replacement of Harrison Street Bridge is finally planned, permitted, and financed. Work will be completed by the Butler County Bridge Department (BCBD), will begin around March 30, 2026, and will last approximately 8-10 weeks. The project scope includes a wider-width (16-feet), aluminum box culvert with headwalls, wingwalls, and a tie-back system. The bridge superstructure will incorporate new storm drain inlets/drainage pipes, replacement of concrete pedestrian sidewalks, and restoration of associated road pavement. Local residents and other frequent travelers of Harrison Street are advised that detours around the bridge will be necessary for the duration of the project.
Overall project cost is projected to come in around $500,000, with the BCBD saving the Borough an estimated 45-55% over the public bidding process. Funding sources include a 2023 DCED Multi-Modal Grant award, a 2025 Butler County Use Fee award, and a 2024 Butler County Infrastructure Bank (BCIB) low-interest loan. In addition, the new Southwest Butler Stormwater Authority (SWBSWA) is anticipated to contribute financially to this project.
The projected lifespan of the new Harrison Street Bridge structure is 75 years.
